Mission
Confirm the load is clean and dry, then put everything where the next person can find it.
There is no recognised domestic qualification for carrying dishes halfway to a cupboard. Finish the handover.
Required equipment
Gather the apparatus.
Finished dishwasher cycle
Wait for the machine to finish and follow the manual for opening or drying time.
Clean, dry hands
Handle eating surfaces without adding fresh contamination.
Clear storage spaces
Know where items live before balancing them in piles.
Safety orders
Before proceeding
Open the machine as the manual directs and let dishes cool enough to handle safely.
Remove sharp or pointed cutlery carefully and do not grab unseen blades in a basket.
A completed cycle is not proof that a shielded or heavily soiled item is clean.
Visual reference
The unloading route
Clean, dry, cool enough to handle.
Remove first to avoid drips.
Tilt pooled water away.
Put every item in its proper home.
Standard procedure
5 defensible moves.
- 01
Confirm completion
Check the cycle indicator or display. Allow cooling and drying time according to the appliance manual.
Inspection: The cycle has finished and items are safe to handle. - 02
Inspect before storing
Look for food, film, or pooled water. Rewash dirty items and drain or dry wet ones before placing them in cupboards.
Inspection: Nothing visibly dirty or dripping is being stored. - 03
Empty the lower rack first
On a two-rack machine, unload the lower rack before the upper rack so water trapped in cups above does not drip onto clean items below.
Inspection: Lower-rack items remain dry as you finish unloading. - 04
Empty the upper rack and cutlery
Tilt any cups holding water away from clean dishes. Handle cutlery safely and group it by its proper storage place.
Inspection: No pooled water is being poured into a drawer. - 05
Put everything away
Return items to their agreed locations. Clear the racks and leave the machine ready for the next dirty dish.
Inspection: The dishwasher is empty and cupboards are usable.
Common failures
Where the operation tends to go sideways.
The damp cupboard
Storing wet items traps moisture. Dry them first.
The permanent clean load
A dishwasher that holds clean dishes indefinitely cannot receive dirty ones.
Trusting the completion light blindly
A missed item still needs washing even if the cycle ended.
Field exercise
Try it where the equipment lives.
Unload one full clean cycle without leaving a staging pile on the bench. Check every item as you move it.
Pass mark: The dishwasher is empty and no damp or dirty item entered a cupboard.
