Mission
Use the correct detergent, choose a sensible cycle, and stop treating every button as an experiment.
The cycle chart in your own appliance manual is the only universal translation device for its buttons. Start there, then adjust one thing at a time when results are poor.
Required equipment
Gather the apparatus.
Appliance manual
Find your model's detergent, cycle, and rinse-aid instructions.
Automatic-dishwasher detergent
Use a product specifically made for dishwashers, in the amount its label and your manual recommend.
Rinse aid if recommended
It may help water drain and improve drying, especially with hard water.
Safety orders
Before proceeding
Ordinary washing-up liquid can produce excessive foam in an automatic dishwasher.
Keep concentrated detergent and pods away from children and pets. Follow the product label.
Cycle names, dispensers, water-softener settings, and products vary by model and region.
Visual reference
The four decisions before Start
Only suitable items with water paths.
Right product, right compartment, right amount.
Match soil and item guidance.
Leave drainage space and choose settings.
Standard procedure
5 defensible moves.
- 01
Find the model's instructions
Locate the detergent dispenser, cycle chart, and any rinse-aid or water-hardness guidance in the appliance manual.
Inspection: You know which compartment receives detergent and whether a rinse-aid reservoir exists. - 02
Check the load
Scrape large scraps, confirm dishwasher-safe items, and make sure spray arms and detergent door are clear.
Inspection: The machine can circulate water and release detergent. - 03
Add the right detergent
Put automatic-dishwasher detergent in the designated compartment. Follow the product and machine instructions for form and amount; more is not automatically better.
Inspection: The compartment closes and no loose product is on a child-accessible surface. - 04
Select a normal cycle first
For everyday mixed loads, start with the manufacturer's normal or auto cycle. Use heavy, delicate, quick, or sanitizing cycles only when the load and manual call for them.
Inspection: You can explain why this cycle suits today's load. - 05
Check drying settings
Use rinse aid or a drying option when recommended. Leave room for water to drain from cups and plastics, then check dryness before storage.
Inspection: Dishes are dry enough to put away without trapping water.
Common failures
Where the operation tends to go sideways.
Soap from the sink
Hand dish soap is not automatic-dishwasher detergent and may flood the machine with foam.
Maximum detergent by default
Product quantity should follow the label, machine, soil level, and water conditions.
Quick cycle for a baked-on pan
A short cycle may not have enough time for heavy soil. Check the cycle chart.
Field exercise
Try it where the equipment lives.
Find three cycle names on your actual dishwasher and write down what the manual says each is for. Choose one for a normal dinner load.
Pass mark: Your choice follows the manual rather than the name that sounds most impressive.
